How to buy Insurance / Extended Warrantys ?
Extended warranties are great money makers for the people that sell them. They wouldn't be in the business if they were not making money, and they make a lot!
The odds are against you coming out ahead or even braking even. Might as well take the money to a casino. The testimonials from the very few that come out ahead are no more predictive that you will also come out ahead than if you dump your money in a slot machine because someone else hit the jackpot.
It's not like health insurance or home/auto liability insurance where the most important concern is protection against a catastrophic loss, which could be orders of magnitude greater than your insurance premium. The greatest loss (e.g., transmission failure) covered by these auto after-market warranties is only several times the cost of the warranty.
